Applying to the Program

McClatchy’s VAPA Music Program is a SCUSD specialty program. As such, an application is required for consideration. The application consists of three parts which are outlined below. If you have any questions about the information here, about special cases, or need assistance with completing any element of this application, please contact one of our directors.

Application Part 1

All applicants, including those that live in the McClatchy High School attendance area must first complete the High School Specialty Programs (HSSP) Application through SCUSD’s Enrollment Center. Be advised that residence in the school’s attendance area ensures enrollment in the school but not in its specialty programs, including VAPA Music. The application window for the 2027-2028 school year opens on Monday October 5th and closes on Friday October 30th, and is run through a portal called SchoolMint. Due to high interest in the program, late applications will not be accepted. To access the HSSP Application, click the button below, scroll down to the section called “High School Specialty Programs (HSSP)” and click the button that says “Log onto SchoolMint”. Create an account and follow the instructions to complete the application.

Application Part 2

Once accepted through the HSSP Application, applicants will be asked to complete the VAPA Music Program Information Form. This is a simple form that collects information about the applicant’s experience and musical goals. This will be shared with applicants once they have completed Part 1 and been accepted by the District.

Application Part 3

The final step to the application process is a live audition and interview. Applicants will be asked to play from a selection of exercises and etudes. The purpose of the placement audition is to determine which major ensemble the applicant will be placed in as well as a preliminary chair placement. We will also take time during the audition to discuss the expectations of the program, collect additional information about the applicant, and answer any questions they or their family might have. A Note About Dual Enrollment With HISP

McClatchy High School hosts 7 specialty programs. HISP is the only one that can be taken concurrently with VAPA Music. If you are interested in dual enrollment with VAPA Music and HISP, we highly recommend that you to contact one of our directors before submitting your SchoolMint application. There are some extra considerations with dual enrollment applications, and we can help you navigate those.
